Chapter 9 - THE LAST CALL TO DANIEL

My father denied threatening Daniel.

He claimed the call concerned a birthday dinner.

The call lasted sixteen minutes.

No recording existed.

But Daniel had left a voicemail for Uncle Thomas immediately afterward.

Thomas had never heard it.

He had changed phones.

The carrier archive still had a copy.

We listened together.

Daniel’s voice sounded tense.

“Thomas.”

“Richard knows I have Grandpa’s trust letter.”

“He wants it.”

“He says if Evelyn ever activates the trust, Preston loses his future.”

“He asked me to convince her to sign a waiver.”

“I refused.”

A long pause.

Then Daniel continued.

“He said I should be careful driving home.”

My hands went numb.

Thomas stopped the recording.

Detective Alvarez leaned forward.

“Play the rest.”

Daniel’s voice returned.

“I’m probably overreacting.”

“But if anything happens, do not let Richard touch Sophie’s trust.”

The voicemail ended.

Silence filled the room.

My father had warned my husband to be careful driving.

Thirty-seven minutes later, Daniel died in a highway crash.

That did not prove murder.

But it destroyed coincidence.

Investigators reopened the case.

The truck driver had survived.

His name was Martin Keane.

He had left Illinois two years earlier.

Police found him in Arizona.

During the original investigation, Martin claimed he hydroplaned.

Now he changed his story.

He admitted someone had paid him to follow Daniel’s car.

Not crash into it.

Follow it.

“Who?”

Detective Alvarez asked.

Martin shook his head.

“I never met him.”

“Cash?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Ten thousand.”

“What were you supposed to do?”

“Photograph where he went.”

“Why?”

“They said he had company documents.”

My father wanted Daniel followed.

Martin insisted the collision was accidental.

Heavy rain.

Daniel braked.

Martin lost control.

His truck crossed lanes.

I believed him.

Not because I wanted to.

Because guilt had destroyed the man’s face.

“I killed him.”

Martin whispered.

Detective Alvarez replied.

“You caused a crash.”

“That is not the same as someone paying you to follow him.”

Martin handed investigators an old email account.

The instructions came from a shell company.

The payment originated from a consulting firm.

Harold King.

Whitmore Hospitality CFO.

My father’s friend.

Police searched Harold’s home.

They found financial records.

Payments for private investigators.

Payments to Marcus Bell.

Payments connected to Daniel.

Harold was arrested.

Within twenty-four hours, he requested a deal.

He was willing to talk.

About my father.

About Preston.

And about the trust.

When prosecutors asked how long Richard Whitmore had been manipulating the family company, Harold gave an answer none of us expected.

“Since before Evelyn was born.”
