Chapter 3 - The Ultimate Betrayal

Outside in the luxury waiting room, Chloe Romano was humming softly to herself, admiring her reflection in the smoked-glass coffee table. She pictured the headlines in the Sunday society columns: Tech Heir Leaves Wife for Dazzling Young Muse in Billion-Dollar Divorce. She could already feel the heavy diamond tennis bracelets and the sweeping staircase of the Central Park penthouse she was about to claim.
The inner door clicked open.
Adrian stumbled out into the hallway, looking like a man who had just survived a mortar strike. His expensive suit was rumpled, his hair wildly out of place, and his eyes wide with stark, unadulterated terror. Behind him stalked Margaret Castillo, her face mottled with a terrifying shade of furious purple.
Chloe blinked, looking up from her reflection with a bright, rehearsed pout.
“Adrian, darling? What took you so long? Did the doctor say when we can schedule the next 3D ultrasound? I want to make sure—"
“Shut up,” Adrian whispered.
The words weren’t loud, but they carried a dead, hollow vibration that made Chloe freeze.
“What?” Chloe laughed nervously, glancing around the empty waiting room. “Adrian, stop joking. You look ridiculous. Did something happen with the divorce settlement? Did Elena try to ask for more money? Because if she wants a handout, she’s out of luck—"
“I said, shut your mouth, Chloe!” Adrian roared, suddenly lunging forward and grabbing her by the shoulders, shaking her with a violence that shocked even his mother.
“Adrian! Stop it! You’re hurting me!” Chloe shrieked, dropping her designer handbag as contents spilled across the white tile floor.
“Mr. Castillo! Keep your hands off the patient!” A pair of burly private security guards, stationed discreetly in the corridor by Attorney Dawson’s orders, stepped forward instantly. They grabbed Adrian by both arms, hauling him away from Chloe and pinning him against the wall with professional ease.
“Get your hands off me! Do you know who I am? I am Adrian Castillo!” he screamed, thrashing wildly like a trapped animal.
Margaret rushed to Chloe’s side, helping the trembling woman up from the floor. “Are you alright, my sweet girl? Don't mind him, he’s just delirious from the shock of the audit.”
Chloe clutched her stomach, her breathing turning shallow and frantic. “Audit? What audit? What are you all talking about? Adrian, what did you do?!”
Before Adrian could answer, Dr. Reynolds stepped out of Exam Room 3, holding a single sheet of blue medical paper in his hand. He didn't look at Adrian. He looked directly down at Chloe Romano.
“Ms. Romano,” Dr. Reynolds said, his voice echoing in the quiet corridor. “Since you were so eager to discuss your medical status with the family, I pulled your complete patient history from our network database. Specifically, the lab results from your consultation at our uptown fertility and endocrinology clinic last Tuesday.”
Chloe’s face instantly lost every drop of color. The carefully applied makeup on her cheeks couldn't hide the sickly, ashen grey underneath.
“I... I don't know what you're talking about,” Chloe stammered, backing away until her spine hit the mahogany reception desk. “I’ve never been to an uptown fertility clinic. I’m pregnant with Adrian’s baby—everyone knows it—"
“You are not pregnant with anyone’s baby, Ms. Romano,” Dr. Reynolds interrupted calmly, holding up the lab report. “In fact, according to the records, you underwent a successful surgical sterilization procedure three years ago. Furthermore, your hormone panels confirm that you are medically incapable of conceiving naturally. And to top it all off... your last three ultrasound scans submitted to Mr. Castillo to prove your condition were digitally manipulated stock images sourced from a medical photography website.”
The silence that followed was absolute. You could have heard a pin drop on the thick wool carpet.
Margaret Castillo slowly turned her head, fixing her eyes on Chloe with a look of pure, incandescent horror.
“What... did you just say?” Margaret whispered, her voice trembling violently.
Chloe’s knees buckled. She slid down the side of the reception desk, clutching her head in her hands, her carefully constructed facade shattering completely.
“You... you lying, manipulative little parasite!” Margaret shrieked, lunging forward with her fingernails bared like a cornered cat. “You faked a pregnancy?! You stole four million dollars from my son?! You destroyed our family name for a pack of lies?!”
“Get her off me! Get her off me!” Chloe screamed, sobbing hysterically as Margaret grabbed a handful of her blonde hair, violently shaking her while the security guards scrambled to pull the enraged matriarch away.
Adrian didn’t move. He stood pinned against the wall by the security guards, staring down at Chloe with a look of such profound, deadened emptiness that he looked twenty years older.
He had traded his wife—a woman who had stood by him through the lean years, who had loved him unconditionally—for a fraud.

He had signed away his children, called them dead weight, and handed over his entire empire to the state.
And as the flashing blue lights of federal police cruisers began to reflect against the tall glass windows of the clinic lobby outside, Adrian Castillo finally understood the true meaning of losing everything.
