Chapter 12 - THE WHISPER AT THE FOUNDATION GALA

At 7:00 PM that evening, the grand glass atrium of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden hosted the first annual humanitarian gala for The Liana Graves Maternal & Neonatal Foundation.

Four hundred prominent physicians, pediatric trauma surgeons, federal judges, and civic leaders gathered beneath the illuminated glass domes. The foundation had already funded twenty-four neonatal intensive care units across New York, providing free DNA verification and emergency legal protection for low-income mothers.

Liana stood at the center of the reception terrace wearing an exquisite, floor-length midnight-navy silk gown that shimmered under the chandeliers. Her dark hair was swept up in an elegant French twist, her skin glowing with radiant health.

Beside her, Matteo wore a bespoke black three-piece tuxedo, his posture towering, proud, and fiercely protective.

"You look breathtaking, my queen," Matteo whispered against her ear, resting his large, warm hand gently against the small of her back.

Liana smiled, leaning into his touch, her hazel eyes dancing with pure joy. "I was just looking at the donation ledger, Matteo. We’ve raised eight million dollars tonight alone. No mother in this city will ever have to wonder if her baby is safe."

Before Matteo could answer, a man in a sharp European-cut tuxedo approached their circle.

He was in his late forties, with slicked-back silver hair, cold blue eyes, and a silk pocket square bearing the embroidered crest of a private banking guild in Geneva.

It was Christian Dupond.

"Signor Varric. Signora Graves," Dupond said smoothly, bowing his head with oily, manufactured deference. "An extraordinary evening for charity."

The surrounding guests faded into the background as Matteo stepped forward half a pace, his broad frame instantly shielding Liana from the Swiss attorney’s view.

"You have five seconds to state your business on this property, Dupond," Matteo said, his voice dropping into a register colder than Arctic ice.

Dupond didn't lose his smile, but his fingers tightened slightly around his champagne flute.

"I am here as a messenger, Signor Varric," Dupond whispered, keeping his voice strictly between the three of them. "Sofia Varric has authorized me to offer a private settlement. Surrender the Swiss maritime shipping concessions, and she will withdraw the Second Circuit appeal. Refuse... and tomorrow morning, the press receives sealed depositions regarding the Varric family's offshore history."

Liana stepped out from behind Matteo’s shoulder, standing tall, looking directly into Dupond’s eyes with the calm, sovereign grace of a woman who had walked through the fires of hell and reclaimed her son.

"Tell Sofia that she had her chance to steal my baby in the dark," Liana said, every word hitting with the force of forged steel. "Tell her that in twenty-four hours, the United States Department of Justice will seize her Swiss trust, revoke your foreign license, and leave her with nothing but the prison water she drinks."

Dupond’s smile froze. The arrogance in his posture cracked as he saw the unyielding, diamond-hard fire in the eyes of the former maid.

"Good evening, Mr. Dupond," Liana added softly. "Enjoy your final night in New York."
