CHAPTER 2: The Perfect Mother

CHAPTER 2: The Perfect Mother
By sunrise, Eleanor Whitmore had become the most hated woman in the country.
Every news channel replayed the same ten-second clip.
Claire falling.
Guests screaming.
Ethan kneeling beside his fiancée.
And Eleanor standing silently at the top of the marble staircase.
The footage ended before anyone could hear her explanation.
It ended before she spoke a single word.
For millions of viewers, that silence became an admission of guilt.
"Monster."
"Control freak."
"Jealous mother-in-law."
The headlines grew harsher with every passing hour.
Talk-show hosts debated whether powerful families believed they were above the law.
Social media exploded with opinions from people who had never met Eleanor Whitmore.
Everyone believed they knew exactly what had happened.
No one asked why the security footage from the staircase had mysteriously disappeared.
Inside Whitmore Manor, the atmosphere was painfully quiet.
The house had always been filled with life.
Staff preparing breakfast.
Gardeners tending the grounds.
The smell of fresh coffee drifting through the hallways.
That morning, even the birds outside seemed reluctant to sing.
Eleanor sat alone in the library, staring at the silver charm resting on the desk.
A black raven.
Its wings spread wide.
Exactly like the one she had found inside Michael's briefcase twenty-two years earlier.
The day after his funeral, the charm had vanished without a trace.
She had spent years convincing herself it meant nothing.
Now it had returned.
A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.
"Mrs. Whitmore?"
It was Martha, the family's longtime housekeeper.
She had worked for the Whitmores for nearly thirty years.
Long enough to watch Ethan grow from a curious little boy into a successful businessman.
"Come in."
Martha stepped inside carrying a tray.
"You haven't eaten."
"I'm not hungry."
"You said the same thing after Mr. Whitmore passed away."
Eleanor managed a faint smile.
"And you ignored me then, too."
Martha gently placed the tray on the table.
"I've learned that grief and worry never disappear on an empty stomach."
Eleanor looked at the woman who had remained loyal through every tragedy.
"Martha..."
"Do you believe I pushed Claire?"
The older woman answered without hesitation.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because I've watched you for thirty years."
She smiled softly.
"I know exactly what kind of woman you are."
Eleanor looked away.
"I wish my son still knew."
Across the city, Ethan sat beside Claire's hospital bed.
Her ribs were bruised.
Her wrist was sprained.
Doctors expected a full recovery.
Physically.
Emotionally was another matter.
Claire looked pale beneath the white hospital lights.
"You should go home," she whispered.
"You've barely slept."
"I'm staying," Ethan answered.
Claire forced a weak smile.
"You've always been stubborn."
He almost smiled back.
Almost.
Instead, his phone buzzed.
The screen displayed one name.
Mom.
He stared at it until the ringing stopped.
Claire noticed.
"You should answer."
"It's not the right time."
She reached for his hand.
"I don't want to come between you and your mother."
The words sounded sincere.
But something about them made Ethan uncomfortable.
For the first time since the accident...
He remembered something.
When Claire had looked at Eleanor from the stretcher...
Had she smiled?
The memory lasted only a second before disappearing again.
Surely he had imagined it.
Hadn't he?
Back at Whitmore Manor, Detective Laura Bennett returned with another update.
"The forensic team found nothing on the staircase."
Eleanor wasn't surprised.
"The line was removed."
Laura nodded.
"Someone cleaned the scene before we secured it."
"Professionally."
The detective placed several photographs on the table.
"These were taken by guests."
Eleanor studied each one carefully.
Then stopped.
"There."
Laura leaned closer.
"What is it?"
"A waiter."
The man stood in the background of one photo.
Head lowered.
Carrying a silver tray.
His face was partially hidden.
"He wasn't part of our regular staff," Eleanor said quietly.
Laura frowned.
"We checked with the catering company."
"And?"
"They never hired anyone matching his description."
Silence filled the room.
Someone had entered the gala disguised as a staff member.
Someone who vanished before the police could question him.
Meanwhile, outside the hospital, reporters surrounded anyone connected to the Whitmore family.
Employees.
Friends.
Charity volunteers.
Most refused to speak.
One elderly volunteer finally stopped.
"Mrs. Whitmore?"
She smiled sadly.
"I've worked beside Eleanor for fifteen years."
"What kind of person is she?"
The woman looked directly into the cameras.
"The kind who paid for my husband's cancer treatment without telling anyone."
The reporters exchanged glances.
Another volunteer stepped forward.
"She funded scholarships for my daughter."
A former employee added,
"When my house burned down, she gave my family a place to live."
The interviews spread online.
For the first time, another side of Eleanor appeared.
Not the wealthy businesswoman.
Not the woman accused of pushing her future daughter-in-law.
A different woman.
One who quietly changed lives without asking for recognition.
That evening, Ethan watched the interviews alone.
One story after another.
A janitor.
A teacher.
A widow.
Each described the same Eleanor.
Patient.
Generous.
Compassionate.
Nothing like the woman the media portrayed.
His confusion deepened.
Could every one of them be wrong?
Or had everyone at the gala misunderstood what they saw?
His thoughts were interrupted by a quiet knock.
The hospital room door opened.
A nurse stepped inside.
"Mr. Whitmore?"
"Yes?"
"A woman asked me to give you this."
She handed him a plain brown envelope.
"No name."
"No return address."
After the nurse left, Ethan opened it carefully.
Inside was a flash drive.
Nothing else.
No note.
No explanation.
Only a small sticker attached to it.
A black raven.
Exactly the same symbol resting on Eleanor's desk.
His pulse quickened.
Who sent this?
And why?
He plugged the drive into his laptop.
One video file appeared.
PLAY ME FIRST
Ethan clicked it.
The screen remained black for several seconds.
Then a familiar voice filled the room.
Claire's voice.
Sharp.
Cold.
Cruel.
"If that maid breaks another glass, fire her."
A man's frightened voice answered.
"Miss Harper, she's worked here for twelve years."
"I don't care if she's worked here for twelve minutes."
Claire laughed softly.
"People like her are replaceable."
Ethan froze.
Another recording began.
Claire again.
"If anyone asks, tell them I donated the dresses."
A woman replied quietly,
"But you sold them online."
"I know," Claire answered.
"And nobody needs to know."
Ethan stared at the screen in disbelief.
The woman speaking sounded exactly like Claire.
But it wasn't the Claire he knew.
Or thought he knew.
The final file was shorter.
Only eight seconds.
A man's voice whispered,
"Be careful."
Claire answered,
"Eleanor suspects something."
Then the recording ended.
Someone knocked gently on the hospital door.
Ethan quickly removed the flash drive.
"Come in."
Claire smiled warmly as he looked up.
"There you are."
She reached for his hand.
"What were you watching?"
Ethan forced a smile.
"Nothing important."
Claire searched his face for a moment.
Then smiled again.
"I'm glad."
Because for the first time...
She wasn't completely sure she still controlled the story.
Miles away, Eleanor stood alone in Michael's old study.
She opened a locked drawer that had remained untouched for over two decades.
Inside lay an identical raven charm.
She placed the newly found one beside it.
Two ravens.
Twenty-two years apart.
The same symbol.
The same warning.
She whispered into the silence,
"This isn't about Claire anymore."
She closed the drawer slowly.
"It's happening again."
