Chapter 8 - The Tarmac Showdown

The wind kicked up by the Gulfstream's twin turbines whipped my hair across my face, stinging my eyes as I sprinted across the open tarmac. In the distance, the plane’s metal stairs were already being retracted into the fuselage, the cabin door sealing shut with a heavy, hydraulic hiss.
"STOP!" I screamed at the top of my lungs, waving my arms wildly, though my voice was instantly swallowed by the deafening roar of the jet engines.
Suddenly, a pair of black SUV security vehicles tore out from behind the airport hangar, tires screeching against the concrete as they cut across my path, skidding to a halt just thirty feet in front of me.
Four armed security guards in tactical gear piled out of the vehicles, their hands resting firmly on the sidearms strapped to their belts.
"Sir! Step back immediately!" the lead guard bellowed through a megaphone, his stance wide and authoritative. "You are trespassing on private federal aviation property. Surrender yourself or face immediate physical detention!"
I didn't stop. I took three steps forward, pointing frantically at the taxiing jet. "My son is on that plane! They are kidnapping him! Move out of my way or run me over!"
"Final warning, Mr. Blackwood!" the guard shouted, unholstering his weapon and raising it slightly. "Stand down!"
I knew if I kept running, they would shoot. The legal system, the guards, the corporate board—everything was engineered to protect the empire at any cost. But as I watched the Gulfstream begin to inch forward, its wings tilting as it aligned itself with the primary runway, a fierce, reckless desperation took over.
I reached into my jacket pocket, pulling out my phone. I didn't dial Marcus. I dialed 911.
"Emergency dispatch, what is your emergency?" a calm voice answered instantly.
"This is Julian Blackwood at the municipal airstrip, sector four," I spoke rapidly, my eyes locked on the guards while pointing my phone's camera toward the taxiing plane. "I am reporting an active, armed abduction of a fourteen-month-old minor—Ethan Blackwood—aboard a private Gulfstream aircraft, tail number B-7749. The aircraft is attempting unauthorized international takeoff without parental consent!"
The lead guard’s face went pale. He dropped his weapon by an inch, looking back toward the control tower as his radio crackled with frantic static from airport air traffic control.
"Hold your fire!" the guard shouted into his shoulder mic, his eyes darting back to me. "Control tower is ordering the aircraft to halt! Repeat, hold all movement on runway four!"

The Gulfstream’s engines sputtered, the deafening whine dropping an octave as the pilot slammed on the emergency brakes, the massive aircraft sliding slightly on the dew-slicked concrete before coming to an abrupt, shuddering halt fifty yards down the tarmac.
